I'm pretty sure I've been looking forward to today's destination the most...Cumberland Island, Georgia! We ate breakfast at the hotel, packed our backpack with supplies we thought we would need on our journey and headed north. We arrived in St. Mary's, Georgia around 10:45 am. We bought our ferry tickets and went to a little restaurant to buy our picnic lunch to take to Cumberland Island (there's NOTHING on the island...a few bathrooms and water fountains but that's all). Once we boarded the boat we had about a 40 minute ride over to the island. The dolphins were in abundance so we had fun watching them along the way. As we started getting close to the Island we could see wild horses waiting for us at the shore. We got excited and knew this was going to be a FUN adventure!
Being silly before heading out this morning.
We all ordered a picnic lunch at Market on the Square.
Ready to board the Cumberland Queen II
Our first sighting of the feral horses!
Horse droppings were everywhere!
These fellas were waiting for us as we got on the Island.
Just couldn't believe how many wild horses we saw...at least 50...saw some wild turkeys too!
We walked along these dirt roads the whole time on the Island. At one point we were just walking along and a wild horse came galloping past us. We thought it was funny because he came out of nowhere and didn't want to stop and visit!
The old Dungeness Ruins are one of the historic sites to see on the Island. It was home to several famous people but burned many many years ago and this is what remains. The horses gather all around this area eating grass.
We found a picnic table near the ruins and had our lunch.
In the background of this picture are salt flats and a view of Amelia Island
We were advised to stay at least 25 feet away from the horses but it was hard to help ourselves and we just had to get up close when we felt it was safe to do so!
On our way back to St. Mary's on the ferry...we were hot, sweaty, and pretty exhausted from our adventures on Cumberland Island!
When we got back to our hotel in Amelia Island we were ready to hit the beach to cool off in the Atlantic!
This evening we just stayed at the hotel and ate dinner. Afterwards we walked down to the beach to enjoy s'mores. A great way to end an amazing vacation together!
